This was a busy weekend. D has been trying to get the sailing team going at his high school since he first started. Now, in his final season, they finally agreed to recognize the club. This doesn't involve any support of course, but does allow the students to post flyers and meet at school, in addition to sailing at Belmont.
The first regatta was this weekend. D was the only student from his school attending, so he didn't have a sure spot. On Saturday, he helped out with setup, launching, race committee, etc. On Sunday, he raced with one of the Ignatius boats.
D drove down to the harbor on Saturday morning. While we were at mass, when I would expect him to start to head home (around 5), he sent a text asking if he could work with another student on econ for a few hours. We agreed 7 or 8, and not to wait dinner for him.
Around 9, I sent a text asking what his plans were. He wanted to stay there, hang out, play video games, etc. He said a couple more kids from school were over and he was enjoying socializing with his classmates. This has always been hard to happen, since we live so far from school.
We were watching "A Princess Bride" with M & P (except I was snoozing on the couch during most of it) when D sent a text asking to stay out later. I reminded him about everything happening on Sunday and we agreed home before 1.
I woke up at 2. C had been up the whole night. D was still not home. I sent a text. Then called. I finally talked to him around 3, with him saying he was almost home.
We tried to ask him what was going on, where he was, what had happened, but it was pretty inconsistent and incomprehensible. Although he said the phone didn't work, AT&T showed lots of messages sent and received during the times we were trying to reach him. We took the phone away again. He deleted everything before giving it over.
Where was he? What was he doing? I have no idea and it's clear D won't tell us.
Nor would I believe him if he did. I'm glad he wasn't in the hospital, or with the police. Is it only a matter of time before before that is the outcome?
I feel so powerless and sad, watching his self-destruction, not knowing how to stop it, praying he's lucky enough to not destroy himself or someone else.
Only time will tell.
