"It's a tender age"

About every couple of weeks I get a breakfast sandwich at the Potbellys downstairs at work. I made a throw-off comment about being distracted and having an 18-year old son at home.

The (relatively young) man at the counter was very thoughtful and said "That's a tender age. I learned a lot about myself then."

Since I was very frustrated and irritated with D due to a stupid argument last night, that was important to hear. This is a tender age for him. I need to remember that.
