D heard from the last college he applied to. The final tally:
Rejected: Stanford, Georgetown, Carnegie-Mellon, Carleton.
Waitlist: University of Chicago, University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Accepted: Marquette, Catholic University of America, Loyola University, Case Western.
Loyola offered a small scholarship ($2000). It's also too close to home. I think it will be good for D, and for us, if he's farther away. I feel sad and guilty that I want him to leave, but I do feel it will be his best hope for a better start.
Even though Case Western is the most expensive ($35,900 tuition), the scholarships bring the three final schools to about the same out of pocket cost (~$25,000/year, including R&B, books, travel, expenses, etc.) It's a lot, but it's something we can manage, more or less. And about what I was hoping for (if not expecting).
D and I have a visit to Case Western scheduled for April 16. He'll visit classes and stay overnight in the dorm.
After that, he needs to decide.
