D decided on college: Marquette. I'm happy with the choice and I think it could be very good for him. College is one of those "re-invention" times where you really can start over and be who you decide to be. He can choose to be a burnout, as he did in high school. Or he can make a better choice.
One of the counselors (I think Gwynn Hale) asked if D was "self-medicating" by using. At first, I didn't understand what she said, or why D would need that. He's healthy and hasn't been abused or anything. He has a strong, supportive, loving family. Why would he need to self-medicate? Once again, my thoughts turn from D to me. His actions are a reflection of my parenting. My self-image tied to his control. Sigh.
I guess the only good thing is I see the steps and links more clearly now than in the past. I see the problem. And that's the first step in the solution.
