For the last few years, we've gone to C's sister's for Thanksgiving. Earlier in November, I talked to D about plans, and said that we were heading out west and wanted him to come with. He seemed fine with the plan.
Even though there weren't classes on Wednesday before Thanksgiving, he wanted to stay in the dorm over Tuesday night. We agreed he'd take the 10am train and we'd pick him up at 12 in Glenview. P's school didn't get out until 2, so that was still plenty of time to pick D up, pick P up and head out west, beating the traffic, etc.
Around 9am, D called to say his laundry wasn't done and he wouldn't make the 10am train. After a quick check of schedules and some phone calls, we had a new plan. D would get on the 12 noon train. C's parents would come down to the house to pick up C, M and me at 1:45. Then we'd pick up P at school at 2. Then we would all drive to Glenview, pick up D and head out. This wouldn't make us much later and would get everyone togheter.
When we got to the train station in Glenview it was around 2:20pm. The train had arrived (and left) around 2pm. D wasn't anywhere in the station. We called and texted his phone, but no answer. C checked the station again, and the waiting area on both sides of the tracks, and the area around the station. No D. No messages on anyone's phones. We checked the train schedule and the next train arrived at 4pm. We decided to wait until 4, mainly because there was nothing else to do.
While we were waiting (and worrying. And getting angry and irritated and embarrassed), we tried calling the station in Milwaukee, to see if D was there. We couldn't get the Milwaukee station to pick up. We also tried calling the dorm (they confirmed he checked out around 11:30). C got the idea to look at the phone log online to see if he was using the phone / talking to people. There wasn't any usage before 12, but we tried sending messages to the last few numbers. (That was all a little uncomfortable as well.)
Eventually, 4pm rolled around, the train arrived slightly late and D got off. When he got in the car he said he missed the 12pm train and forgot his phone at the dorm. "sorry" was said, but didn't seem sincere. He also looked out of it and promptly fell asleep for the ride.
